Números en inglés

Una de las primeras cosas que se aprenden al iniciarse en un nuevo idioma son los números (quizás tan importante como aprender a pronunciar el abecedario). Aprender los números en inglés no tiene ninguna complicación, pues la forma de escribirlos sigue siempre una estructura fácilmente memorizable e idéntica para todos ellos.

Números del 0 al 9

La clave para aprender los números en inglés pasa por memorizar estos diez primeros números, ya que del veinte en adelante son simples combinaciones de éstos.

Números del 10 al 19

A diferencia de los números posteriores, los números del diez al diecinueve no siguen una regla estandarizada de escritura. Estos números son imprescindibles para tener un nivel básico de inglés, pues son muy utilizados en la vida diaria de cualquier persona.

Número del 20 hasta el 99

A partir del número veinte, los números en inglés siguen una estructura fácil de recordar. Lo único que se debe memorizar es la manera de escribir las decenas del número en cuestión.

De esta manera, si queremos decir un número situado entre estos, simplemente debemos coger la decena a la que pertenecen y añadirle el número de unidades. Por ejemplo:

• 43: forty three
• 65: sixty five
• 78: seventy eight
• 23: twenty three
• 39: thirty nine

Los cientos, miles y millones

Si queremos escribir números superiores al noventa y nuevo debemos hacer uso de las palabras hundred (cientos), thousand (miles) o million (millones). La estructura es la siguiente:

Nº millones + million + Nº miles + thousand + Nº cientos + hundred + Residuo

Por supuesto, si nuestro número no es lo suficientemente grande como un millón o un millar podemos omitir toda la estructura situada a la izquierda. Un detalle bastante importante en la formación de estos números es la incorporación de la palabra “and”, empleada siempre que queramos unir el número de cientos miles o millones con las decenas y unidades. Aquí algunos ejemplos:

• 172: one hundred and seventy two
• 511: five hundred and eleven
• 1203: one thousand two hundred and three
• 25.456: twenty five thousand four hundred and fifty six
• 12.980.356: twelve million nine hundred and eighty three hundred and fifty six

Números ordinales en inglés

Los números ordinales son los que se usan para expresar un orden, tal como usamos los números ordinales en español (primero, segundo,tercero, cuarto,…), pero en inglés, además de usarse para expresar un orden, también se usan para escribir las fechas, indicar nros de calles (generalmente se hacen de este modo), el nro de piso de un edificio, etc.

Su composición es muy sencilla y la puedes encontrar en la siguiente tabla:
